Challenge

Russia offers a unique environment for IoT connectivity compared to densely populated European countries, because of the sheer size of the Russian Federation and its sparsely-populated or empty areas where there is no GSM mobile network coverage – although these areas can still be home to industries such as mining, oil & gas production or logging. In addition, there is a specific requirement to store and process all data within Russian borders to comply with national data protection regulations.

Western Digital R&D teams continuously run testing cycles, as a part of the organization’s mission to deliver innovative products to a wide variety of customers. DevTest projects require setting up and customizing physical servers; these are not only resource intensive tasks, but also time-consuming and often result in a slow time-to-market. Scaling up and out adds another layer of complexity, especially given the difficulty of managing various hardware configurations.

Securitas wanted to give new and existing customers a proposition that was unlike anything they had offered before, a security system that broke the traditional mould but took advantage of the monitoring infrastructure that was already in place, including the manned response capabilities and alarm receiving centres.

Providing machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless connectivity to deliver vital traffic information to local municipalities and their motorists to improve traffic safety.

The key business challenges are: - Effective prevention of derailments - Reduction of oil spills on railroad transportation of crude oils - Alerts to first responders depending on material carried - Public safety answering points (PSAPs) and State Emergency Response Commissions (SERCs) need to know the schedule, load, and location - Flawless communication between PSAPs and first responders

Some IoT devices consume massive amounts of information. A single autonomous vehicle today can demand up to 40 terabytes of data for every eight hours it’s on the road. You get the idea. Mobile adoption and usage are absolutely exploding, with no end in sight. And that would be fantastic if the network could handle that kind of traffic. With 4G/LTE networks already reaching capacity, the industry is looking ahead to the next big Thing and 5G promises to be just that.

Without continuous connectivity, real-time data is really hard to deliver for any cloud service provider. The number of IoT devices with cellular connections will nearly quadruple over the next five years with increasing LTE subscriptions and access to 5G networks, according to Ericsson’s bi-annual Mobility Report. At the same time, ensuring reliable connectivity, while being mindful of security and device management as IoT implementations scale, continues to be a challenge for industrial IoT use cases.

Solution

Searching for an IoT communication solution that is easy to deploy, offers long -orange coverage and the lowest total cost of ownership, ERTH was quick to recognize the benefits of LoRaWAN, and chose to work with Actility, based on the company’s existing track record in powering over half of all the national scale LPWA networks deployed by operators globally. “The agreement signed between ER-Telecom Holding and Actility is an important step in building a federal IoT coverage”, says Andrey Kuzyaev, the President of ER-Telecom Holding.

Stratoscale Symphony Software-Defined Hyperconverged Private Cloud includes holistic on-prem solution that covers the entire datacenter stack in addition to advanced cloud capabilities that are delivered on-prem.  Secdonly the Private Cloud includes freedom of choice, which is deployed on any commodity x86 server, enabling maximal utilization of existing hardware.

The premise for the security system was that it should be extremely user friendly and accessible to a diverse target market. For this reason the dedicated gateway incorporates GPRS and broadband connectivity, making it possible for those without a fixed broadband connection to benefit from a monitored alarm.

Web-based, wirelessly enabled, intelligent traffic signs — including radar speed display signs and variable message signs powered by KORE Global Connect. With multi-national customers using web-based interfaces, All Traffic Solutions delivers global access to local traffic data in real-time. The data and statistics collected by these devices are what helps customers determine safety benchmarks, traffic pattern flows and ultimately change the flow of traffic in a city for the better. And by coordinating with KORE, All Traffic Solutions is able to manufacture every device they deploy with wireless connectivity, knowing that global services are available and can be implemented quickly and easily when requested by their customers. This single source solution allows municipalities to take advantage of the wireless connectivity without having to order different equipment. Since every device is installed with this capability, they have the opportunity to decide to use it or not.

Synapt’s team developed the end-to-end Connected Railroad solution that sends alerts along with preventive measures to first responders, departments in charge. It makes use of several sensors, including accelerometers, gyroscope, seal lid openers, and motion sensors.

By turning the very devices that are using all of that data – namely connected vehicles and autonomous vehicles – into decentralized providers of mobile internet services, we have the chance to not only improve the wireless network as we know it today, but the ability to enhance data services by reimagining the very way the internet works.

It stands to reason then that GoodMeasure, a long-time customer of Electric Imp, is quite excited about the recent debut of the vendor’s cellular connectivity functionality. Electric Imp products – which enable and manage secure connectivity – are woven into every fiber of GoodMeasure’s platform, according to co-founder and CTO Regan Ryan.

Operational Impact
Impact #1

The Russian ecosystem is burgeoning rapidly. Today, there is a shortage of localized devices using the dedicated radio frequencies for LoRaWAN in Russia, but according to ERTH, there are enough to begin PoCs. ER-Telecom Holding is working with local and global partners to address this issue. Many IoT start-ups are beginning to emerge to join the Russian IoT and LoRaWAN ecosystem and ERTH will open a dedicated developer portal for Russia with the help of Actility.

The lab environment deployment process has been significantly simplified and enables setting up of 100s of VMs in minutes, as well as consolidating multiple labs on heterogeneous hardware.

Home security alerts by SMS, email and app notifications.

Municipalities around the world can receive vital traffic and safety information to better manage traffic flow, implement new DOT programs, improve driver and pedestrian safety as well as the reduce traffic congestion.

Regular notifications with shipment information to rail carriers, departments in charge, and county officials

Why tie consumers to fixed radio tower installations, with their inevitable dead zones and heavily congested regions, when mobile access points give providers the ability to reposition these towers on the fly creating a much more flexible and resilient network?

Real Time Monitoring of machines Increased Efficiency in the consistent flow of the process

Electric Imp’s products aim to ease all of that. An imp-authorized hardware module embedded in a device connects to the so-called Electric Imp Cloud. That cloud authenticates and manages all devices at scale, establishes secure connectivity, and handles the necessary processing and integrations as the data flows between the device and a third-party public or private cloud.

Impact #2

Actility is not only supporting ERTH with its network roll-out, but it will also offer IoT expertise to Russian customers as well as lead the development of a Russian LoRaWAN ecosystem.” Felix Marnin, Actility.

Stratoscale Symphony utilizes hyperconvergence to increase utilization, while ensuring high availability; Symphony’s flexibility enables the management of mixed workloads via a single pane of glass.

Broadband and GPRS connectivity for broad accessibility.

Increasing information flow through a variety of sensors available for data collection (tampering, cameras, speed, traffic patterns, etc.)

Effective prevention of derailment

Through turning automotive vehicles into decentralized mobile service providers, we can meet consumer demand and power the infrastructure that is developing with or without it.

Decreased Downtime due to early detection of possible machine failure Predictive Maintenance with alert systems

The new solution supports hybrid operation modes, allowing devices to securely use lower-cost networks when available, according to a press release. For example, telematics applications can send high volumes of buffered sensor data via Wi-Fi when a truck is at a loading bay, but only transmit location data and alerts via a cellular connection when the vehicle is moving, according to the press release.

Impact #3

ER-Telecom Holding is also transforming itself and creating new business in the process. The company is developing own products and platform for SMEs offering a building management utility. “We want to become an IoT business“, says Victor Ratnikov. “In technology, there’s no one size fits all. We are not focused on technology, but on our customers, their businesses, and how our solutions can help them transform.”

Stratoscale’s self-service user experience offers templates for physical and virtual servers for simple, easy and quick deployment for projects.

Video and camera monitoring for streaming and still images.

Full-fledged dashboard with infrastructure, weather, and shipment information with GIS data

True 5G won’t have any presence in the market until 2020 at the earliest, and even then, the technology will be wholly incompatible with existing equipment. (One expert has estimated that a 5G handset, if produced today, would cost at least $1800 to build, so there’s work to be done.) Ultimately, 5G will face years of slow growth before it becomes mainstream and for decades it will have to co-exist worldwide with Wi-Fi, 4G, 3G and even 2G networks.  Thus, this solution is both fast and effective.

Data Aggregation for studying patterns and calculating the OEE.

This added service builds out a portfolio to help customers scale connected solutions, boosting the benefits of buying an out-of-the-box connectivity solution versus developing it in-house, according to Fiennes.
