Challenge

Orford, Quebec is home to 3,600 people. The rugged hills surrounding the town complicate the job of supplying water to its residents, businesses and fire protection services.

The Spanish Government has launched a CO2 Capture and Storage Program in Hontoman with the aim of developing this technology. This programme's approach is based on the fact that CO2 capture and storage could be an essential part of the solution to achieve substantial global CO2 emission reductions.

Before working with Ayla Networks, Ozner was already using cloud connectivity to identify and solve water-filtration system malfunctions as well as to monitor filter cartridges for replacements.

But, in June 2015, Ozner executives talked with Ayla about how the company might further improve its water systems with IoT technology. They liked what they heard from Ayla, but the executives needed to be sure that Ayla’s Agile IoT Platform provided the security and reliability Ozner required.

Unmanned weather stations play an essential role in the effort to analyze and predict the world's ever-changing weather patterns. The unmanned stations collect and store large amounts of weather data and then download the data at regular intervals to a back-end host for analysis and long-term storage. The computing device housed in the weather station must be robust enough to work continuously for long periods of time while exposed to a wide range of temperatures. It should also be able to collect readings from various sensors that use different data transmission protocols, and have the capability to store large amounts of data.

In the framework of its predictive maintenance offering, ONEPROD part of the ACOEM group provides monitoring solutions that allow to avoid unexpected breakdowns in industrial production tools. Traditionally ONEPROD was using wired data acquisition systems. However they were costly and hard to install in harsh environments or explosive zones, like in the oil & gas and mining industry. To cover the distance to connect and power the monitoring equipment considerable lengths of cable are required especially in industrial spaces with difficult access. Developing a wireless data acquisition system became a key success factor in the ONEPROD strategy in order to avoid any cabling issue and to improve the safety of the staff in charge of portable measures.

The traditional way to measure power consumption of a device is to connect multimeters, oscilloscopes, or specialized power analyzers to the hardware that is to be tested. These tools are slow, difficult to set up, and make it difficult to measure the power consumption for more than a few seconds. Also, they typically require a fair amount of experience with electronics and electrical engineering.

When it came to modernisation of the existing compressed air station, the company’s management decided to opt for a compressed air contracting arrangement to ensure that the compressed air supply would always meet the latest technical standards and be capable of taking advantage of the benefits that Industry 4.0 has to offer – and not least due to the frequent fluctuations in demand in the automotive supplier industry. In this operator model, the compressed air station itself remains the property of the air system provider, whilst the customer simply uses the compressed air as needed, just like power from an electrical socket, paying only for the volume of compressed air actually used – and always at the same fixed rate. From an accounting perspective, this effectively turns fixed costs into variable costs. At Scholz, the new station was installed in a space-saving container on the roof of the company building.

Coordinating data in the age of digitalisation presents a real challenge, especially where production facilities are concerned. The task of maintaining the many and varied components used in production also entails working with a wide variety of different software packages (editors) Each change that is made to the software results in a new version that has to be securely stored – versions need to be properly managed and there can only ever be one version that is the latest authorised version. But how can you make sure that all changes that were made to the software now running on the machine/device were authorised?

Solution

Using eWON devices the municipality of Orford can monitor pumps and waters levels in real-time allowing for the collection of valuable data to maximize their system.

Worldsensing provided 5 Spidernano surface seismic recording units SRU and borehole instrumentation to obtain a clear picture of reservoir behaviour. Monitoring equipment includes temperature and pressure gauges and a U-tube fluid sampling system. Ozner is leveraging Ayla’s IoT cloud platform to better manage and maintain its connected filtration systems and to help expand its sales into international markets.

The Ayla Insights business intelligence and analytics tool was employed to obtain real-world customer data from the Ozner Water connected smart-filtration systems in use. The customer data collected through Ayla insights included additional maintenance and service checkpoints from the deployed systems.

Meanwhile, Ayla engineers built Ozner a mobile app that lets Chinese customers remotely control their own filtration systems using popular social networks, such as Weixin (aka WeChat).

Protocol Conversion and Front-end Data Processing The data collected by a typical unmanned weather station includes temperature, rainfall and snow accumulation, air pressure, humidity, and ultraviolet intensity. One of the tasks that the UC-7420 unit must handle is protocol conversion, since there is no guarantee that the devices collecting the weather data all use the same protocol. In addition, the UC-7420 can be used to do preliminary data processing before downloading data to the central computer. MOXA's UC-7420 is ideally suited for these tasks, since the user can easily embed a C program that is custom written for the devices used at the station. If future changes involve adding or removing devices, the programmer simply needs to modify the C code, recompile it, and then download the executable program over the network to the UC-7420 unit. Connecting to the Network and the Internet In addition to being programmable, the UC-7420 also offers users an array of connection options. To begin with, data entering the serial ports from attached sensors can be processed and then forwarded through one or both of the dual Ethernet ports to the LAN. One of the serial ports can also be connected to a V.90 or GPRS modem for PPP connections, and a PCMCIA port is available for installing a wireless LAN card for 802.11b/g networks. By including multiple connection options in the UC-7420's design, user's gain the flexibility needed to connect from virtually anywhere. Combinations of connection types can also be used to provide redundancy. For example, if unavoidable network problems cause an interruption in service, the user can connect by modem. CompactFlash Storage Space One of the dilemmas faced when creating a "small" computer is how to provide users with adequate storage space. For unmanned applications, it is best if the storage device does not contain moving parts. Although hard drives may seem to last forever for day-to-day use, we cannot make this assumption for continuous use at remote locations. The UC-7420 overcomes this problem by providing a CompactFlash slot. If needed, flash memory cards with storage capacity of up to several gigabytes can be used to store data until it is convenient to transfer the data to a central computer.

Based on HIKOB technologies and systems, ACOEM launches ONEPROD EAGLE, a new smart online solution, more efficient and with long-range capabilities to collect all required data to detect early defaults. Sensors, wireless data acquisition network and wireless communications are deployed in the solution. Software Components - HIKOB NET PULSE application

The new way, enabled by tools like the Otii power box, consists of plugging in a few cables and immediately seeing the results on the screen.

Following a detailed compressed air audit to identify the company’s exact compressed air needs, Scholz’s compressed air station was designed to incorporate the very latest technology, including all of the features that today’s advanced stations should offer. Of course, first and foremost, this includes outstanding reliability, quality and efficiency, as well as impressive energy savings. In addition, ease of maintenance together with networking and integrated control features consistent with the Industry 4.0 environment also play a key role, not least in laying the foundation for predictive maintenance. A safety concept was also devised. The data gathered during the analysis were input into the new system's controller – a SIGMA AIR MANAGER 4.0 (SAM 4.0) in this case – and therefore provide the foundation for highly-efficient operation of the entire system. Since the compressors and compressed air treatment components are equipped with integrated industrial PC technology, they are able to forward their data to a master controller. This master controller monitors all components, as well as the environmental and production conditions. is also able to precisely adapt compressed air production to match the company’s actual compressed air requirement. Furthermore, amongst many other key benefits, the SAM 2 optimises pressure values, automatically adjusts compressor system air delivery to accommodate fluctuating air demand and optimises system efficiency through constant analysis of the relationship between control losses, switching losses and pressure flexibility. This advanced controller also enables the compressed air station to benefit from future services, such as predictive maintenance. The controller also allows remote diagnostics capability. If requested by the customer, this option means that performance data are constantly sent to a data centre operated by the compressed air system provider for monitoring. The master controller independently analyses the situation at all times and, if appropriate, sends a message to the service team, or directly to the local installation technician or the central data centre. The air system provider’s central data centre then acts as the dispatching point for all further activities – worldwide.
Built on Bright Wolf’s Strandz platform and leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud storage, Haemonetics won IoT Evolution App of the Year in 2015. Through their partnership with Bright Wolf, Haemonetics released HaemoCloud, connecting the blood supply chain from donation to transfusion. The new system works directly with their existing HaemoCommunicator suite – connecting all Haemonetics sensors and devices in order to format and transfer device information, as well as collect and manage operational data, and send it to the AWS cloud. HaemoCloud also integrates with hospital and other institutional information systems to store and share information with relevant hospital and IT staff, creating a seamless data experience for customers. Data collected in HaemoCloud will allow Haemonetics to build preventative maintenance algorithms and provide customers industry-leading device performance. The system’s flexible architecture also enables Haemonetics to take advantage of new market opportunities and grow with new offerings from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the future.

The master controller independently analyses the situation at all times and, if appropriate, sends a message to the service team, or directly to the local installation technician or the central data centre. The air system provider’s central data centre then acts as the dispatching point for all further activities – worldwide.
Built on Bright Wolf’s Strandz platform and leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud storage, Haemonetics won IoT Evolution App of the Year in 2015.
