They merge the technologies present in smart cities and smart homes, with applications suited for a group of people located close to each other and sharing common objectives and requirements. Applications include wayfinding, smart parking, checking facility availability, locating and tracking belongings, remote collaboration, and automated infrastructure management. The term smart campus refers to suite of integrated infrastructure, platforms and applications.

Some solutions also allow customers to use their smartphones to scan shelf labels in order to display additional information such as nutritional labels directly on the phone.
