About The Customer
NEXT is a leading retailer based in the UK, offering a wide range of products including clothing, footwear, and home products. The company operates more than 500 stores in the UK and Ireland, and around 200 mainly franchised stores in over 30 countries overseas. NEXT is committed to responsible sourcing and sustainability, with a particular focus on the sourcing of timber and timber-containing products. The company aims to source 100% of its timber from responsible or certified sources, such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), by 2025.
The Challenge
NEXT, a UK-based retailer with over 500 stores in the UK and Ireland and around 200 franchised stores in over 30 countries overseas, is committed to the responsible sourcing of timber and timber-containing products. The company's vision is to work with supply chains to deliver timber products that come from responsible or certified sources such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). NEXT aims to achieve a target of sourcing 100% of its timber from responsible and certified sources by 2025. However, the challenge lies in meeting the due diligence requirements as stated by the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), which was designed to reduce illegal logging by ensuring that illegal timber and timber products can't be sold on the EU market.
The Solution
To meet the EUTR's due diligence requirements, NEXT implemented the Timber Due Diligence system developed by ChainPoint. This platform was built with several functions to ensure efficient risk assessment and compliance with the EUTR. The functions include supplier onboarding, supply chain mapping, master data management, automatic risk assessment, and efficient manual risk assessment and risk mitigation. By implementing this system, NEXT can effectively manage its supply chains and ensure that all timber and timber-containing products are sourced responsibly and in compliance with the EUTR. This solution not only helps NEXT meet its legal obligations but also supports its commitment to responsible sourcing and sustainability.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Timber Due Diligence system has enabled NEXT to effectively manage its supply chains and ensure compliance with the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR). The system's functions, including supplier onboarding, supply chain mapping, master data management, and automatic and manual risk assessment, have streamlined the process of sourcing timber and timber-containing products. This has not only helped NEXT meet its legal obligations but also supported its commitment to responsible sourcing and sustainability. The system's risk mitigation function also ensures that any potential issues are identified and addressed promptly, further enhancing the efficiency and reliability of NEXT's supply chains.
