The Challenge
In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced many testing centers to halt in-person operations, leading to a dramatic shift from onsite testing to remotely proctored exams. This sudden change put a strain on virtual testing platforms, many of which were not built to handle the surge in demand. Prometric, an industry-leading testing and assessment provider, was faced with the challenge of quickly scaling their ProProctor remote assessment platform without compromising its security and reliability. Prior to this, Prometric was using a legacy on-premise AV infrastructure that lacked the reliable connectivity and scalable features needed for a global remote assessment solution. They also wanted to tailor ProProctor’s user interface to the needs of fully remote candidates, but building a new UI from scratch would have delayed the launch and created a larger backlog of exams.
The Solution
Prometric partnered with Twilio and Greyshore Associates to rapidly re-launch the ProProctor solution in less than four months. They used Twilio Flex and Programmable Video to provide secure, reliable remote exams at scale. Twilio Flex allowed Prometric to build a “single pane of glass” UI according to their exact specifications, eliminating the need to build a new UI from scratch. Twilio’s Programmable Video was integrated into ProProctor to ensure a clear and reliable video connection, which is crucial for remote exams. Prometric and Greyshore worked with Twilio to develop a solution that would enable greater connectivity and clarity for longer testing durations while maintaining the same level of quality throughout. They also implemented a process to stitch video segments together to address the challenge of video stability for longer exams.
Operational Impact
  • The integration of Twilio Flex and Programmable Video into the ProProctor platform has significantly improved the remote exam experience for both candidates and proctors. Candidates now enter a video-enabled self check-in process where they are guided through a series of steps to prepare for the exam. They then video chat with a live agent who assists them through the remainder of the check-in process and monitors their progress throughout the exam. This has not only reduced the technical and impersonal nature of completing assessments through an online portal, but also increased the confidence of test takers in the platform. Furthermore, with the rich set of analytics provided by Flex insights, Prometric can support large volumes of candidates testing concurrently and measure the user experience. Looking forward, Prometric plans to explore additional use cases to continue enhancing the remote assessment experience.
