About The Customer
Reykjavik Sightseeing is a leading tourism operator that offers guided day tours in Reykjavik city and the southwest of Iceland. The company is committed to providing an enriching and enjoyable sightseeing experience to its customers. It caters to a diverse range of customers from different linguistic backgrounds. The company is known for its innovative approach to enhancing the tourism experience and is always on the lookout for ways to leverage technology to better serve its customers. With the introduction of the IoT-based audio guide, the company has taken a significant step towards improving the user experience and catering to a wider audience.
The Challenge
Reykjavik Sightseeing, a leading tourism operator of guided day tours in Reykjavik city and the southwest of Iceland, was faced with the challenge of servicing a wider range of customers and improving the user experience. The company wanted to provide intuitive and easy-to-use audio content to its customers to enhance their sightseeing experience. The challenge was to deliver this content in multiple languages to cater to the diverse linguistic needs of the tourists. Moreover, the company wanted to ensure that the content delivery was automated and triggered by the location of the bus to provide relevant and timely information to the tourists.
The Solution
To address this challenge, Reykjavik Sightseeing equipped each seat on the bus with headphones and an Android tablet. These tablets were pre-loaded with a custom app that contained audio content in ten languages to complement the English-speaking guide on each tour. The tours were made available offline, and the audio was triggered automatically using GPS. The app was designed using the Automatic Tour Guide template, which features GPS-enabled tours with high-quality photos and audio narration. The app also used outdoor GPS tour guides with custom point content templates. The client provided branding assets such as the app icon, loading image, banner logo, and chose the theme colours. Each location in the tour featured a custom page to display the media content on Lenovo tablets. The app was only available on devices provided in the bus and was managed via Locatify Kiosk, which allowed the company to update the devices remotely.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the IoT-based audio guide significantly improved the sightseeing experience for the tourists. The use of GPS-triggered audio content in multiple languages made the tours more engaging and informative. The tourists could now enjoy high-quality audio narration and photos that were relevant to their current location. The offline availability of the tours ensured that the tourists had access to the content even in areas with poor internet connectivity. The use of the Locatify Kiosk for managing the app allowed the company to update the devices remotely, thereby ensuring that the content was always up-to-date. The customization options provided by the app allowed the company to maintain its brand identity while providing a user-friendly interface for the tourists.
